Veterans Day with Kids

Parades, ceremonies, and a chance to say thank you. Here's how to bring little ones along respectfully and comfortably.

Veterans Day, November 11, is a day to honor everyone who has served. Many communities hold parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and memorial services, and lots of families bring their kids to say thank you in person.

It's a meaningful day to share with children. It can also include some very loud moments that catch families by surprise.

The Loud Moments to Plan For

🎖️ Rifle and cannon salutes

Ceremonies sometimes include rifle volleys or cannon salutes. These are sharp, sudden bangs that can be very loud up close.

✈️ Flyovers

Military flyovers are exciting to watch, and jet noise can be intense, especially for babies.

🥁 Marching bands

Drumlines and brass bands are loudest right at the curb. A few steps back makes a big difference.

📣 Speakers and crowds

Amplified speeches and big crowds add up over a long morning outside.

Tip: put earmuffs on before the ceremony begins. A salute is over in seconds, so there's no time to grab them once it starts.

Respectful and Ready

  • Talk about it first: explain in simple words what Veterans Day is and who you're there to thank.
  • Practice quiet moments: ceremonies often include a moment of silence, the national anthem, or Taps. Let kids know when to be still.
  • Say thank you: older kids can make a card or simply say "thank you for your service" to a veteran.
  • Plan an exit: stand near the edge of the crowd so you can step away quietly if a little one gets restless.

November Weather

Veterans Day events are usually outdoors in the morning. Dress kids in warm layers, and remember the low autumn sun can still be bright. UV400 sunglasses help kids watch the parade without squinting. Earmuffs fit over a warm hat too.

Let the Thank You Be the Memory

Bringing kids to a Veterans Day event teaches gratitude in a way they'll remember. With a little planning, the whole family can be there, comfortable and present, for the moments that matter.
