Celebrating Christmas with Kids

Holiday concerts, light shows, Santa visits, travel, and snowy days outside. Here's how to keep the season merry for little ones, not overwhelming.

The Christmas season isn't one day. It's weeks of school concerts, tree lightings, holiday markets, crowded malls, light displays, church services, parties, and travel to see family, often with a ski trip or snow day thrown in.

For babies and young kids, it's magical. It's also a long run of loud rooms, bright lights, late nights, and new places. A few simple habits help the whole family enjoy it.

The Loud Side of the Holidays

Holiday noise sneaks up on families: a packed concert hall, a brass band at the tree lighting, a parade with drumlines, a party with the music up, or a mall full of shoppers and announcements.

Gift tip: some noisy toys are surprisingly loud, especially when little ones hold them right up to their ears. Test sound-making toys yourself, and choose ones with volume control when you can.

Travel Season

  • Airports and flights: keep earmuffs in your carry-on for loud terminals and naps on board.
  • Road trips: low winter sun shines straight through side windows. Kids' sunglasses help on long drives.
  • New beds, new routines: pack a familiar blanket or toy, and protect nap time where you can.

Snow, Sun and Glare

Winter sun is lower in the sky, and fresh snow reflects much of it back up toward kids' faces. Sledding, snowball fights, and ski trips can mean a lot of UV and glare, even on cold days.

👀 Eyes

UV400 sunglasses or snow goggles protect against UV and cut snow glare. Goggles also block wind and flying snow on the slopes.

🧢 Skin

Put sunscreen on cheeks, nose, and ears before heading out in the snow, especially at higher altitudes.

Lights, Crowds and Big Feelings

Light shows, Santa lines, and holiday parties are exciting, and they can also be a lot. Kids with sensory sensitivities may need extra support.

  • Go early or go quiet: visit light displays and Santa on weeknights or early in the day when crowds are smaller.
  • Plan a break spot: know where you can step out of a concert or party for a few quiet minutes.
  • Keep earmuffs in the diaper bag: they help with a loud concert, a crowded party, or a nap in a busy house.
  • Don't overbook: one or two special outings a day is plenty for little ones.

Let the Magic Be the Memory

The best holiday memories are usually the simple ones. With a little planning and the right gear, every member of the family can enjoy the season, from the first carol to the last present.
