The Best Ear Protection for Babies and Kids

Little ears are more vulnerable than adult ears — and they don't come with a warning light. Here's how to shield them at concerts, fireworks, and race days without the meltdown.

A single fireworks show can top 120 decibels, and a motorsport grandstand or stadium concert isn't far behind. For reference, hearing experts say sustained sound at or above 85 dBA can begin to damage hearing — and the louder it gets, the faster the damage happens. Very loud sounds can hurt unprotected ears in under 15 minutes.

Children are especially exposed. Their ear canals are smaller and their hearing is still developing, and they rarely recognize when a sound has crossed into "too loud." They can't tell you their ears hurt until the damage may already be done. That's exactly why we build earmuffs for babies and kids — so a family day out never costs them their hearing.

The short version

For babies from newborn to around 2, choose BANZ Baby Earmuffs. For ages 2 and up, choose BANZ Kids Earmuffs. Both use over-the-ear cups (not earplugs), are light enough to wear for hours, and carry a noise reduction rating strong enough for fireworks and concerts while still letting your child hear your voice.

Why earmuffs, not earplugs

For young children, earmuffs are the safer, simpler choice. Earplugs rely on a snug seal inside the ear canal — and a small child's canal makes that seal hard to get right, with a choking risk if a plug is dislodged. Earmuffs sit over the ear, so there's nothing to insert, nothing to lose, and a child can put them on in seconds. They're also easy for a parent to check at a glance.

Our picks

Best for babies & toddlers

BANZ Baby Earmuffs

Designed for newborns through about 24 months, these use plush, foam-filled cups and a soft, leather-like headband cover that adjusts as your baby grows. At roughly 135 grams they're light enough that most babies forget they're wearing them — which is the whole point. The rounded, low-profile cups are shaped to fit smaller heads without pressing too hard.

Ages: 0–2+ years  ·  Noise reduction: NRR 26 dB  ·  Weight: ~135 g  ·  Fit: Adjustable headband, newborn to ~36 months

Best for kids

BANZ Kids Earmuffs

For ages 2 and up, the Kids Earmuffs step up to a firmer, more durable build with an adjustable headband that keeps pace with a growing child — some styles fit comfortably up to around age 10. They come in kid-friendly prints and colors, which matters more than it sounds: a child who likes how their earmuffs look is a child who actually keeps them on.

Ages: 2+ years  ·  Noise reduction: NRR 26 dB  ·  Fit: Size-adjustable headband  ·  Styles: Multiple prints & solid colors

What the numbers mean

In the U.S., hearing protection is measured by its Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) — how many decibels the device blocks in a controlled lab test, overseen by OSHA. An NRR of 26 means up to 26 dB of reduction under ideal conditions. Real-world performance is usually a bit lower, since no fit is perfect in a lab and on a wriggling toddler at the same time, so treat the rating as a strong ceiling rather than a guarantee.

For babies and kids, hearing specialists generally recommend an NRR in the 20–26 dB range. That's the sweet spot: enough to take the edge off fireworks, engines, and amplified music, but not so much that your child is cut off from your voice and the ambient sounds that are part of normal development.

How to choose

  • Match the age. Baby models are shaped for smaller heads; kids' models are built to take more wear and tear.
  • Check the fit, not just the box. The cups should fully surround the ear with no gap, and the headband should feel snug but not pinching. Re-check the adjustment as your child grows.
  • Prioritize weight and comfort. The best earmuffs are the ones your child will actually leave on. Lighter is almost always better.
  • Let them pick the color. Buy-in matters. A print your child chose is a print they'll wear.
  • Think about the event. Fireworks, motorsports, and concerts all clear the threshold where protection is worth it. When in doubt, bring them.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can my baby wear earmuffs?

BANZ® Baby Earmuffs are designed for newborns and up. If you're taking an infant somewhere loud, over-the-ear protection is the right call from day one — just make sure the headband is adjusted for a gentle, complete seal.

Will earmuffs block out my voice too?

No. Protection in the recommended 20–26 dB range lowers dangerous peaks while still letting your child hear speech and everyday sounds nearby. They'll still hear you — the fireworks just won't be overwhelming.

How do I know they fit correctly?

The cushioned cups should completely surround each ear with no gaps, and the headband should sit snugly without digging in. If you can slide a finger under the cushion easily, tighten the fit.

Can they wear them for a whole event?

Yes — that's what they're built for. At around 135 grams, BANZ® earmuffs are light enough for extended wear. Take short breaks in quieter moments so the experience stays comfortable.
